Always keep the pistol pointed in a safe direction away from valuable people and things. Hold the pistol in your strong hand and take the magazine out by depressing the magazine release. Place your weak hand over the slide and rack the slide back and forth several times, lock the slide back and visually inspect that the chamber is clear.

Make sure your finger is off the trigger, and put the pistol on safe. The pistol should never be pointed towards a person even during unloading. Press the magazine release usually located on the side of the pistol, this releases the magazine, unload them one by one out of the magazine. Pull back the slide to extract the chambered round.
