Fold letter in half or in thirds according to paper size. Written side should be right side up, not upside down! When removed from envelope, it should open to read.

The proper way to fold a letter to put in an envelope is to fold it into thirds. Starting from the bottom, fold the paper a third of the way. Take the top, and fold it down on top of the bottom fold. Then place it in the envelope and seal.
