The most important thing to remember is that your feelings are unimportant unless you are the bereaved. Express your deepest condolences, and have a short happy story about the deceased ready if the opportunity to tell it becomes available. Arrive at a funeral early, as the family often comes in at the end.

It all depends on the culture and religion of what funeral you are attending. But in Catholic funerals you just have to dress in black, take a peek at the person and say a short prayer and give your condolences out to the loved ones.

A simple, "I am sorry for your loss, please let me know if there is anything I can help you with" is all that is necessary. Anything additional often comes off as blubbering. Unless it is family or close friend, it is not necessary to stay for hours. Simply showing up to pay your respects is what is most important.
