What is the normal repair for a sticking accelerator?

The best thing you can do is to make sure there is nothing holding the accelerator down. Floor mats can hold it down. If it all looks clear try to clean the metal bracket on the accelerator and then spray PB Blaster on it and pump it while the car is off.

It's a 4 step process. 1. Remove all engine parts that prevent you from accessing the butterfly. 2. Clean around the edges of the butterfly. 3. Lubricate the bushings of the shaft. 4. Reinstall all engine parts.

I would say the first thing to do is to check the throttle cable. Chances are it is sticking and needs lubricated. Apply some cable lube to it.Then check that the return spring is installed correctly and is strong enough.

Depending upon the vehicle, and the set of problems causing the sticking, the repair would include removing the throttle body, or carburetor and cleaning it. Or on older models and some newer replacment the throttle return spring or springs.

The leading cause for a accelerator to stick is the accelerator cable being worn and frayed in the inside of the plastic surrounding that is meant to protect it. This wiil cause it to bind and stick. The only way to fix this is to replace the accelerator cable.
