The infield fly rule states that if there is someone on base and there are less than two outs and the batter hits a pop up to the infield, the batter is automatically out. The fielder doesn't have to catch it. This prevents a fielder from dropping it on purpose to get a double play.

The infield fly rule refers to when the team at bat has two outs, and players on first and second base. If the batter hits a pop up that wont leave the infield, and the umpire assumes that it will be caught, he can call the batter out.
