The tradition where football players pour Gatorade over their coach's head began in 1985, when New York Giants players Jim Bunt and Harry Carson dumped it over the head of their coach, Bill Parcells. The tradition went national after the team dunked Parcells 17 times in the 1986 season.

Gatorade was originally created for the University of Florida Gators. The tradition, though, started in the 1980s when Bill Parcells, the New York Giants' coach, got the first "Gatorade shower".
