You should use a combination of wall compound and acrylic compound which will provide a maximum hold for the plaster.

It is best to use mixture of wall compound and acrylic compound as it provide good hold for plaster, if it is used it will provide fine coating for plaster

The best thing to do is use joint compound. It will take a few layers. The best thing to use is plaster of paris mixed with horse hair. That should make a good fine coating.
