Honestly it depends on your personal situation. If you've never had a baby Mirena isn't the one for you. If you've had children and are unsure if you want more then Mirena could be the one for you.

Copper IUDs can stay in place for up to 10 years. They have a slightly higher risk of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. IUDs with Levonorgestrel(LNg) release the hormone progesterone. They can stay in place up to 5 years, have less risk of PID, but are associate with benign tumors. IUDs are effective for pregnancy prevention, but do not protect against STDs.

Both copper and hormonal IUDs have very good effectiveness rates for preventing pregnancy. Copper IUDs may cause heavier periods or more severe cramping, whereas hormonal IUDs may lead to lighter or no periods, though neither is guaranteed, and most side-effects from copper go away in time. Copper IUDs are used for approximately 10 years, about twice as long as hormonal ones.

A copper IUD is probably the best choice, it can work as emergency contraception if you get it after having unprotected sex. It also sometimes stops your period or makes it really light. It can significantly reduce cramping too. They are really good and you don't have to think about birth control for a few years.

There are two major types of IUDs: copper and hormonal. Copper IUDs are implanted for longer (up to ten years), while hormonal IUDs are implanted for up to five. Your decision will likely be guided by this, as well as any reactions you have to either metals or hormones.

I can't say from personal experience, but I know Mirena is supposed to last you 5 years, while another one only lasts 3 years. Good for you doing research.

ParaGaurd is the best IUD because it is a copper IUD and is thus hormone free. It is the only copper IUD on the market in the United States. Some women report heavier periods with this IUD.

Mirena is a very reliable, hormonal IUD which is good for five years. Because it releases a low dose of hormones, it can actually improve and stop your periods after time. Paragard is a copper IUD that you can use for up to ten years. It is non-hormonal, and very effective, but it can cause increased cramping and bleeding.
