What is "stripping membranes" in pregnancy?

It is perform during the vaginal examination by a midwife of a doctor by placing a finger inside the opening of the cervix and separates the membrane from the uterus. The membrane is also known as amniotic sac. This is done not to break the water but to stir things up,to stimulate labor constractions.

Stripping membranes often refers to a procedure your physician or OB/GYN may perform to move along your labor and delivery. While not formally considered an induction, this invasive procedure is performed during a pelvic exam and separates the amniotic sac from the wall of the uterus using the provider's fingertip.
