Scraping or stripping the membranes mean the Dr. will insert his or her finger into the vagina and into the cervix separating the cervix from the amniotic sac.

Stripping or scraping of the membranes is a quick procedure sometimes done at the end of pregnancy to encourage labor. It involves the provider putting her or her fingers into the cervix and moving the fingers around to separate the cervical tissue from the uterine tissue. It's not required before labor, so decline it if you don't want it done.

I had my membranes stripped when I was pregnant with my daughter. It took a few minutes in the office. It was a simple procedure that helped dilate my cervix to help start labor.

The doctor scrapes the mucus plug covering your cervex. It will just help you to deliver on time although for some people it isnt always successful. For most it isnt painful but may be a little uncomfortable for some. Also afterwards you may find that you are spotting for around two days.

It does not hurt at all. The doctor inserts an instrument that looks a lot like a crochet hook and gently breaks your membranes. This will encourage labor to start. It feels much like a vaginal exam.
