Leptospirosis is an infection caused by the bacteria Leptospira. It is found mostly in dogs and can be fatal if not treated properly. Since the bacteria lives in water, the disease is more common in water dogs, like retrievers. A vaccine prevents the disease in dogs. Humans can contract leptospirosis, but it is rare.

I believe you mean Leptospirosis, or Weil's Disease, a disease cause by a bacteria that can be transmitted from animals to humans. It is common in animals but rarely transmitted.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection from being exposed to Leptosira interrogans bacterium. Also called Weil's disease, the bacteria itself lives in free swimming bacteria in bodies of water, and then there is the parasitic type that needs a host to feed off of.
