Achilles Tondonitis may cas the tendon to thicken in certain places. If you are an athlete, this quite possibly could be the problem. Check with your doctor as soon as possible. This problem can easily be diagnosed with a physical exam. If this is diagnosed early, it can respond very well to treatment.

The large painful bump on your Achilles tendon could be from bumping your leg into something, like a chair or a bed frame or something of that nature.

A bump or lump on the Achilles' tendon could be tendonitis or Achilles' tendinopathy. This is when the tendon becomes thickened in the mid-portion of the Achilles' tendon. See an orthopedic doctor and get some exercises to help with the problem.

Most likely you have torn your Achilles. The pain at the bump is most often from the swollen tendons in the area. Surgery is an option.

It must be repaired or replaced. A synthetic rubber bungee cord, with metal hooks removed, is the best replacement device. If stapling, use surgical steel staples to avoid rejection. These bungies come in multiple sizes. There's a size for almost everyone. Harbor Freight carries all sizes at reasonable prices.
