EMP is an attack that can make all electronic equipment in the effected area useless. It can be done by detonating a nuclear weapon high within the atmosphere causing a dangerous result. Many countries only use microchips in their electronics, although Russia still uses vacuum tubes which are impervious to an EMP attack.
