What is an average wpm typing time?

Most jobs that give word per minute tests will expect that you can type somewhere between 45-60 words per minute. The tests that measure these would include spelling, spacing, and punctuation errors as negtive words (never mind that spell check would fix this in seconds). On the otherhad the average computer literate person types between 30-40 words per minute.

I took a typing class in high school and have been touch typing for decades now, and my wpm is 71 at last check. Many employers who specify typing speeds request 30 wpm or more. I'm going to guess that the "average" speed is somewhere in the 20's to 30's.

The average typing speed for most professional offices is 60-80 words per minute. If you are working as a dispatcher, high-volume data entry or in an extremely fast-paced environment, then the requirement might be higher (80-90 words per minute). In a non-office environment, the average speed is lower - 25-40 wpm.

Most company's desire a average of 50wpm as a typing time. 50wpm shows that the typist is competent and really understands the keyboard. It also demonstrates accuracy. Nobody wants a slow typist that is inaccurate as well. Typing a clean 50 wpm shows that the person has good skills.

My actual speed is 112 WPM. But I never used the standard pattern that they would normally teach you to use in order to use all fingers. I use four fingers in my left hand and only three fingers in my right hand.

An average word per minute typing time is 35 wpm. That would be a good beginning speed. As you become more proficient, a speed of 60 wpm is not difficult to reach. Any faster and you are beyond average.
