They are sometimes called Hex Keys. They are just hexagonal tools that are used like a screwdriver but can only be used with hex screws/bolts. They are superior to screwdrivers because they stay located in the screw and they are less likely to slip when tightening/loosening.

They are superior to flat head screwdrivers, but phillips screwdrivers also self-locate to the screw/bolt. One draw back of Allen Wrenches is that you need to have a whole set for them to be useful. A couple phillips screwdrivers will fit into most phillips screws.  add a comment

If you look at an allen wrench from its narrow end, you will see a hexagon. Otherwise, it tends to be three to four inches long and the metal has a ninety-degree bend in it. The purpose of an allen wrench is to screw in bolts that have a hexagonal hole in their heads. It's a good tool.

It is a particular tool that allows downtrodden office workers in modern office buildings to open a casement window. Since the building management doesn't want the windows open they give one to the super and hope that nobody knows they can buy one (which is, of course, kept hidden and is possibly cause for dismissal if found).

As others have mentioned, allen wrenches are just like screwdrivers but they have a hexagonal shape. keep in mind that there are metric and imperial (US) sizes, so if your hex key is not fitting well, its probably because you are using the wrong size.

An allen wrench is a simple, small and light weight tool. It is an L shaped wrench that usually has six sides and comes in sets of various sizes. They are used to drive screws and bolts that have a hexagonal socket in the head. Either end of the tool can be used to take advantage of reach or torque.
