A linux distribution is basically a customized version of the linux kernel with extra software/management tools. There are many different distributions, each created with a specific purpose in mind. Some are large and focus on being complete desktop OS solutions, others are tiny and focus on very specific functions.

A Linux distribution is the set of software which runs on top of the Linux kernel and forms a complete operating system. Each distribution is geared toward different tasks or users. Anyone can make a new distribution because the software is open source.

Linux is a operating system. It was created to be open source. this lead to multiple "distributions" being created by different people. Each once is based on the same software but have their own distinct characteristics.

Linux is the source code, or base of a program. The distro is the different versions people have made. There are many differences between all of the Linux distros. The most preferred seems to be Ubuntu.
