Commercially available ink made for tattos is the preferred medium. People do use carbon powder, graphite, and iron oxide for some more ancient forms of tattoo. Many forms of ink are available including invisible tattoos only perceivable by blacklight.

For tattooing there is special ink designed to be applied to the skin. Like all inks it consists of different pigment(depending on the color) suspended in a binder.
