I think my printer is out of ink, but I don't know how to get it out, or if I can get the ink out without making a mess.

The cartridge is designed to deliver a certain amount of ink. Usually there is sponge inside to help it flow to the nozzles. It's a mess if you open it up, but go for it. Then buy a new cartridge.
