Professional quality tattoo ink is inexpensive ($6-10 a bottle, easy to find, and is created to be fade resistant and sterile. Homemade tattoo ink is notorious for being unreliable as to the staying power, some don't even last as long as it takes for the tattoo to heal, and often introduce infection.

You can make your own ink by burning paper and diluting the ashes until it's of ink consistency. I wouldn't recommend it though. Tattoos are permanent. Spend the money so you don't have to look at some ugly homemade thing that didn't turn out how you hoped.

You should never try to tattoo yourself at home. Not only will you end up with a ugly tattoo that you will regret very much but you also run the risk of an infection or other health issue. Do yourself a favor and just have a professional do it.

If you are thinking about getting a tattoo, you should go into a parlor and have one done by a professional.
