What happens when your appendix ruptures?

An infected appendix is inflamed and filled with pus. It can burst and throw the infected material throughout the peritoneal cavity. Peritonitis is the condition that quickly develops, requiring the abdominal cavity to be opened up and flushed out. Otherwise, the toxicity of the organs would be fatal.

If you have appendicitis, you will need surgery to take out your appendix .You get a sharp pain in the lower left hand side of your abdomen and suffer vomiting, you need to hospital immediately as it is poisoning your blood .Sometimes an inflamed appendix bursts. This can cause a dangerous infection in your abdomen .

While buildup of gases in your gastrointestinal tract can cause pain in any area of your abdomen, it is usually worst on the right-hand side (where the appendix is located).  add a comment

Acute abdominal pain on the lower right side is an indicator for appendicitis. An appendix ruptures when it is filled with infection that penetrates its walls. The result is an infectious mess spreading throughout the thoracic cavity. This is a life-threatening medical emergency requiring immediate surgery as well as prompt antibiotic treatment.

Infection spreads through the peritoneal cavity, not the thoracic cavity, which is where the lungs are. The diaphragm separates the two body cavities.  add a comment

There is usually an infection in the appendix, and when it ruptures it can spread the infection to other parts of the body. It is very important to get to the hospital for this to be started on medication and have the surgery to take out the appendix.

You should remove the cruel posts from this page! My friend has a son who is a medic in Afg. Four days of terror waiting for details. The recovery will be months. He saves lives; must have ignored his own pain.

This is a serious situation. If the appendix ruptures the shock is unbearable. It will lead to the immediate death. The patient will not accept any treatment onces the appendix is burst. The patient will go to coma stage immediately after the rupture. The internal bleeding will drain away large amount of blood. So pay attention in the begining itself.

Reply by malone (4817):
This is not accurate. There is no internal bleeding. There is no coma. Peritonitis, while very serious, is treatable. Goodness. So much misinformation.  add a comment

This isn't true at all, my appendix burst and I didn't realize it, I felt better and walked around with a burst appendix for four days before going to the hospital and having an emergency appendectomy. I had peritonitis and my blood was septic, but I'm alive.  add a comment

Thats not true at all!! My appendix ruptured and I had 3 abscesses in my pelvic area. One of which was 7cm long. I was in my bed sick for a month before I ever went to a doctor. I was never in a coma. And I'm obviously not dead.  add a comment

My son had a ruptured appendix which was not even noticed for two weeks - no pain, no other symptoms, until his urine turned brown.  add a comment
