What flying insect has a yellow tail?

It depends on what the rest of the bug looks like. It sounds like it is most likely a sort of gnat but thats a stab in the dark.

Large hornets have been known to have yellow tails. Robber flies have yellow tails, but they are not very common in some parts of the U. S.

Its probably a mayflie. The adults have long yellow tails, but only live long enough to lay eggs from a few minutes to a few days depending on the species.
