Gnats, midges and no-see-ums are all creatures that live as you describe. If you look on the Internet you should be able to see pictures of the different types. Some eat food, some spread disease, some bite outright and some others are just a nuisance, flying into drinks and drowning.

They are most likey nats, I used to have them all overe my house just call a bug man and they should be able to get rid of your problem you have with these pests, or just get some bug spray and kill the your self if you would like.
