Necessary equipment would include a thermometer, filter, pump, air hose, fish net, water test kit and chemicals(too high pH will kill your fish), an aquarium cover, siphon hose, scrubber to clean the sides, bottom gravel, and possibly an aerator, depending on the size of your tank. Don't forget the food!

Freshwater aquariums need a filter, heater, air pump, air stone, thermometer, water conditioner and lighting. The most important would be filter. Saltwater needs a filter, power head(s), protein skimmer, good lighting, heater, thermometer, and possibly a sump or refugium.
