The long tail means a strategy in which a an online business sells a huge amount of things in small quantities. Examples would involve companies like Amazon, Ebay, or Netflix.

Several "long tails" in the Internet refer to legacy software. For example, even though Internet Explorer 8 is available, there are still some users who use IE 4 and IE 5. Another example is websites and web pages that were written many many years ago. There aren't very many of them left, but they stretch out as a long tail.

Long tail means that when you search for something on the Internet, you use at least 3 words in your query. This limits your search to fewer results.

Long tail is a way of describing a style of specific group streamlining sites to target an smaller audience. The term was created back in 2004 by Wired magazine's Chris Anderson. Meaning essentially "less is more" business operations.
