When you purchase a phone and have to activate it, this means you contact the service carrier that you are going to use for service and actually start the service. In other words you are actually haveing your service turned on that particular phone to be able to start using it.

By activating your phone it's like registering it. Your phone will not work until you call your cellphone provider and ask them to activate it.

To activate a phone means that you need to connect it to your account and have the phone turned on. Usually you are provided with a number to call in and give your account number and have your phone turned on. If you are not given this number then contact your phone dealer.
