What does a small avulsion at L5-S1 mean?

I think this has something to do with the discs.

Generally avulsions mean the tearing away of something. Avulsions are not usually associated with the spine. Most often a physician might say there is a bulge at a particlar vertebral area. A bulge does refer to a disc. This means that a disc is weakened and is at a greater chance to herniate.

A bone fracture occurred where the lower spine meets the tailbone. One or more bone fragments broke away from the main part of the vertebrae due to physical trauma.

This area is in your back and does have to do with the disks. L5 is the at the disc level and S1 is the root comp. Having problems with this area is very common.

Avulsion means a bulging and if present at the L5-S1 level it may be due to a cas like projection of the spinal cord. It is called a meningocoele.
