You do not necessarily have to go to school, but a certificate would give credibility to you. At the very minimum, you will have to be licensed by your state. This simply requires registration forms and fees.

All states have specific requirements for the training of cosmetologists, which includes hairstyling/cutting/coloring, make-up, esthetics, manicures, pedicures, etc. Each state requires a certain number of hours and experience to prepare students to take the national board exam and practical. The requirements for each state are esily found online along with a list of accredited schools.

If you want to be a beautician you have to go to school. You may not have to if you want to be a shampoo girl.

The first thing you should do is attend an accredited cosmetology school in your city, where you'll be aking beautician-related courses and general education courses. Second, you'll have to take your state's licensing exam.
