What do I do about my dog's excessive licking?

You need to to try and determine if your dog is licking for medical or behavioral reasons. If she has dry skin, fleas, or other skin abnormalities, you need to take her to the vet. If it is behavioral, the best idea is to divert her attention when she licks.

My vet told me to use a spray that keeps flies off horses. They don't like the taste so they do not lick! I dont think the brand matters just any fly spray just make sure it is safe for the dog.

This could be fleas or a nervous disorder. Treat her for fleas, make sure you treat the environment to and make sure you walk her regularly.

The first thing to do is take the dog to a vet. Make sure that there aren't any parasites (like fleas) that the dog is allergic to. Can also check for other conditions. If disease/parasites are eliminated, the vet could have suggestions as to what to do next.

It could be an allergic reaction to something, which can be helped with a shot of steriods. She could possibly have thyroid problems and need medication.

You could get some bitter apple spray and spray it on the area she is licking to stop her from doing this. I would first look to see if there is a sore or something that is bothering her in the area. If so take her to the vet. It could be many things that are bothering her.
