Typically any noise coming from a rear end lead me to think there is a problem. Rear-ends installed without the correct setup tend to make a howling sound. Worn rear-end can also make noise as the become looser. I would check to make sure the lash ans pinion depth are correct and that it has clean fluid in the housing.

Well their is a possibility that it could be the pinion gears. It could also be that the drive shaft was damaged due to hitting something under the vehicle, and has caused the drive shaft to be out of balance. Both of those issues would cause noise. It could also be the rear breaks.
