First check your battery for full charge and good connections, get out the tester and be sure it is fully charged and connected. Try starting once more. Sadly usually a loud metalic grinding noise is usually a torn up ring gear or pinion gear.

If it has a grinding noise it is most likely due to lack of lubrication and excessive friction. You must consider giving it for servicing.

My friend it sounds like you need a new starter, if the sound is only coming when you start it then yeah I would say so. You should also check the belts that run it they may be rubbing on the sides and they could snap at the worst time.

Grinding noise could be due to a faulty battery. Have your battery tested and make sure it's connected properly. If this doesn't help it may be the starter clutch assembly.

Well if the starter grinds then it is probably mis-aligned and is not meshing correctly. You should remove the starter ans inspect it. There should be shims holding the starter away from it's mounts. Either there are none installed the ones installed are wrong causing the starter to grind. This could damages to the bike if not corrected.
