Anytime you paint countertops you need to put a finish coat. A polyurethane that can be used around food. Your paint should be food friendly also.

It is not usually the best choice to paint a counter top. If you must do it, make sure you sand and rough it up first. Prime well before painting. Choose a glossy enamel paint, realizing it may take several coats to get good smooth coverage. You may check into a sealant after paint is dried for extra protection.

Due to the amount and type of wear, as well as water, heat and cleaning considerations, painting countertops is not advisable. Not matter how durable of a paint you use, you are likely to incur scratches, flaking and possible discoloration within a short period of time.
