A Real Estate Investment Trust buys houses, apartment buildings, retail and commercial space in large volume. By owning and renting many properties at once, they get the benefits of diverse rental income as well as the ability to buy and sell buildings to make cash flow. You buy shares in the REIT to invest in it.
