It could be for a number of reasons, but overuse of the muscle can generally cause pain. Heavy lifting or sitting for long periods could be the cause of the pain.

Quite honestly you might spend to much time sitting down and not enough time working out or getting your blood flowing. It might be caused by malnutrition. I would recommend icy hot pads until your body gets used to outdoor activities.

When you have been sitting in a seat, whether it be hard or comfortable, there comes a time when you have to change position, otherwise your buttocks will ache.

Usually my pain in that area comes from my pelvic bone being misaligned or my hip being out of its socket. I have scoliosis, so my source of pain may be different from yours. Talk to a doctor if it persists.
