Black diarrhea can be caused by blood in the stool or even by whatever you have eaten. Eating a hefty amount of chocolate can cause it or even some types of dark fruits and vegetables. Think of the BRAT diet for diarrhea; "bananas, rice, applesauce and toast".

Black indicates blood or some kind of dark food (like berries). If it were red blood, it would indicate lower intestine bleeding, but if it is black it means that there is blood somewhere in the stomach or small intestine. This can be caused by ulcers as well as crohn's disease and similar disorders.
