What breeds make good family watchdogs?

The German Shepard is a great dog for small children. It is an incredible watchdog yet extremely gentle with kids. I grew up with them and the only problem I had is that they are very protective and may not like your kids friends or yours for that matter.

Most breeds if raised right a treated well will gladly put themselves in danger to protect their children. I would look in the herd family for a family centered dog

English Sheepdogs are wonderful with children and will make amazing watchdogs. Plus they love to go for walks and play with the children as well when growing up. German Shepards might also make a good choice. I would avoid dobermans, rotties, and pitbulls to be on the safe side.

Breeds that are formidable watchdogs include, but are not limited to male labrador retrievers, male golden retrievers, and german shepherds.
