Some of the breeds that make very good guard dogs are the Boxer, Bull Mastiff, Chow Chow and the Rottweiler. Also, the larger terrier breeds can be good guard dogs, such as the Airdale.

German Shepard's are very good guard dogs because they are easily trained and very loyal. You could take the dog to training classes, and eventually he could even become a service dog. That would help with the discipline of the dog, and make him feel close to you so he could better protect you.

I would say that a Doberman Pinscher would make a great guard dog. They are athletic and look very intimidating!

The Akita is a great guard dog they are loyal, extremely protective of their owners they need no additional attack training. These dogs need basic obedience and nothing else. In Japan they are used as police dogs they have a bite of 2000 lbs. of pressure per square inch. They are like a loaded gun they are naturally protective.

Labradors and Sheepdogs make great guard dogs. Sheepdogs tend to be better at guarding as they do not attach so quickly.
