IUD's no longer pose the risks seen in the early market. Today, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is the most severe risk (rare). The most common risks occur after insertion and include cramping, uterus perforation, and abnormal bleeding. The best birth control option differs for each woman, depending on health and sexual activity.

The major risks of an IUD are ectopic pregancy and tearing. Both are unlikely, but possible. I have the Mirena which is small and plastic. The only problem I had with putting it in was incompetence. When I had a doctor that knew what she was doing, it was fine.

IUD's present various risks to the female reproductive system. For instance, they can contribute to serious infections and illnesses of and relating to the female reproductive system. This can also cause concern in relation to long-term female reproductive health. Serious infections can severely damage a woman's system. As a result, the IUD is not right for all women.

IUDs are a very effective form of birth control, and when used with another method, you will be over 99.9% protected against pregnancy. The risks include cramping, bleeding, pelvic inflammatory disease, and perforation of the uterus. Most complications occur during and following insertion.

One possible risk is that you could be allergic to it. Also, it's not 100% effective in preventing pregnancy, so you also run the risk of having an unplanned pregnancy.
