The law in every state is that both parents are responsible for the support of the child and must contribute accordingly. Most states have a formula that determines the support of each parent based on earnings (or earning potential). Failure to pay child support can result in attached wages and assets, suspended driver's license and incarceration.
Michigan, like all states, has a formula by which they determine child support, this is detailed on the Michigan state courts website, or on inquiry to the clerk of courts.
