This is a type of insulation that is used below the fiberglass which is also weather resistant. It is useful especially in very hot or cold climates to lower heating and cooling costs.

The blue or purple drywall is a new popular alternative because it is a mold and pest resistant treated gypsum which is expected to last longer in moist weather environments than conventional untreated drywall ever could. You will notice some wood studs coated with a blue treatment now as well.

If it is on the exterior of the building, it is 1" rigid insulation. Normally, a masonry veneer is installed over this insulation. The blue board gives additional "r"-value to the exterior wall.
