Use joist hangers and appropriate nails, which may come with the hangers. These are brackets designed for the size boards you're using. Pinch them together before nailing them in place.
Attaching joists to ledger/face boards can be done using metal joist hangers. Simpson Strong-Ties are a brand of hanger available in most home improvement stores. The hangers are nailed to the face board and the joists slide into the hangers and are also nailed to the hanger.
You will want to get some colored screws that match the color of the wood you are using for the face boards. Then screw directly through the face boards and into the end joists.
