Basically very young babies need feeding and changing regularly. From a very young age it's important to talk to them and give them lots of attention. Babies let you know when they need something and Mum soon learns to recognise different cries eg there's the hungry cry, need changing cry, in pain cry and just want company cry.

Infants are very, very needy. The need lots of support as well as love. They are hungry most of the time and will sleep a lot. The best vitamins an infant could get is from the mothers breast milk. Vitamins found in breast milk are healthier than store bought formula.

In general, be very gentle with the baby. Your local hospital probably offers basic care classes along with childbirth - check with them to see if they offer classes.

Most important things to know: always put baby to sleep on its back. Always support the head and neck. Don't shake the baby, even a little. Take a class.

The basics of infant care is to help them develop their ability to be independent one day, reading, talking, and exploring everyday things with them. Love them, dress them, clean them, care for them. Unconditional Love.

Having a new baby includes: cleaning the umbilical cord stump with rubbing alcohol (10-15 days), changing diapers (checking for diaper rash), watching for yellowing of the skin/eyes (jaundice), getting him/her regular immunizations, gently sponge bathing (not full immersion), nursing your baby (8-12 times/day), and providing the affection they need.

I highly recommend taking infant and child care classes before this baby is born. If you don't you'll have a real wake up call since infants are hard to take care of since they need something all the time. If you know someone with a baby maybe you could spend a day helping them out to learn about baby care.

Babies are easy to take care of when they are little. All they need is a clean diaper and a full belly, and lots of love.
