The basic thing to remember about writing a synopsis is that it a condensation. The goal is to express the ideas and themes of the work in a shortened version. For a school assignment, the purpose would be to demonstrate you know the meaning of the work and the themes that explain that meaning. Concentrate on themes and major ideas.

Start off my brainstorming (like you did in grade-school) and then branch those ideas into full thoughts. Make sure you read out loud after you're done. You tend to pick up mistakes better that way.

When writing a synopsis, you should never try to go overboard with detail. Give only the important and main ideas of the piece. Because what you're writing a summary, it is not necessary to go off on a tangent; stick to the main idea and keep things relatively brief.

Start by jotting down the high points of the the work. Pare it down by eliminating details that don't support the main idea you want to convey.
