What are some tips for writing poetry?

I just want to write for myself and a few others, not to be published.

Practice, practice, practice. First efforts will feel clunky, but what seems to be second nature for poets almost always starts with discipline. Find and read poets you like. Experiment with rhyme, meter, and form. Allow yourself to write what you're feeling without judgement. Jot down observations and metaphors in a notebook as they come to you. And, finally, have fun!

first advice i can give is to read a lot of poetry. Also reading out loud helps. Listen to the words and sentences. The more you write, the more you develop.

Don't stick to the rhyme - poems that rhyme at all costs often sound cheesy. Try to add a little humour to avoid cringe-worthy pieces.

I was terrible when I started and it really helped to practice every day and to show my poems to other writers for critique. If you don't know other writers, posting someplace like Fiction Press can be a good way to start. Also, don't rhyme as a beginner.

Poetry doesn't have any fixed rules, which gives you a lot of freedom to write. It doesn't have to rhyme, but you want to make sure the rhythm is pleasant to listen to (read it out loud). The most important thing is to write from the heart!
