You must own these books: "On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft" by Stephen King. It is perhaps the best book ever written on the art/craft of fiction. "Bird By Bird" by Anne Lamott and "The Lie That Tells The Truth" by John Dufresne. All three are invaluable, indispensable and essential for anyone who wants to write.

Characters are the most important thing in fiction - if you don't believe in your characters, neither will the readers. Write biographies for each character. What do they like and dislike? What are their hobbies and personalities? Where did they grow up? How do they talk? Picture them in your mind like they're real people that you can interact with.

The basis for good fiction is the characters you create. Fiction is not a plot advanced by cardboard people. It is based on conflicts between believable characters, no matter the genre (science fiction, westerns, etc. ). Create good characters and know a lot about them as people before you get started. What color socks do they wear?

Harlan Ellison said to write a short story every day for a year. Stephen King says to set a goal to write so many words a day. The main point is to write, write, and write some more. There's no replacement for just writing and seeing what works for you.
