I would strongly suggest you get some lessons. You can read books, but practical experience with a teacher is both greatly informative and can be great fun.

Learn the terminology first. You can't learn from books or other people if you don't know what they are talking about. Try taking a class from ASA or US Sailing.

Well you might want to just be safe when your on sea. Buy some life jackets. Make sure the boat has enough fuel before going to sea.

Take your new boat out to the middle of the lake and put up the sail . Once the boat starts to move take note of its speed and direction
