First I would look for space saving options such as under cabinet mounted lighting, a wall mounted microwave cabinet, Small racks that can be mounted to the inside of your cabinet doors for more storage space. Next consider a well built counter top.

Take a look through some magazines to get an idea of what you like. Sometimes something simple like painting your cabinets a different colour will be enough of a spruce.
