What a fun idea!! Here are some suggestions: Use ceramic if possible because these create a unique look for less. Also, you can use a mural or hand-paint a background if you don't want to spend a bundle on tile! If you do have a little more to spend, mosaic tiles are always fun too!

Something simple and not dated, like a metallic (silver or brushed nickel?) toned tile back splash, would be your best bet. Try checking local hardware stores to get an idea of what you like. Costs will vary but you will be able to change paint colors/themes in the coming years.
