Fences are sometimes installed between neighbors. For others, a green hedge of shrubs could be planted. Large bushes resembling lilacs could be used or shorter flowers such as peonies, roses, or even, iris. Many prefer a line of fir or cedar trees. Others revert to stone walls.

One of the best ways to landscape is to create consistency that flows across property lines. Agree with your neighbor on the size and area of the bed, the types of plants and the bed material (rock, bark, etc.) Avoid planting a row of plants that follow the property line, but instead scatter them randomly and naturally.

If you want privacy, try installing a short, inexpensive fence, around 2-3 feet tall, or some bushes. For more privacy, try large trees.

Depending on the size of the yard, many natural landscaping techniques can be used in lieu of a fence separating yards. Try intricate designs with low shrubs, bushes or even mulch. If using mulch, be sure to plant flowers and add decor such as lawn ornaments using a theme that would be of interest to both neighbors.
