What are some good elementary reading strategies?

My 3rd grader is struggling.

The most important element is for your student to be reading as much as possible. Have him select his own books. Have your student practice high frequency words. Help your student develop self-correction strategies so he can go back if he reads something incorrectly.

Choose 3 books, one he can't read on his own, one he can read with help, and one that he can read easily. For 30 minutes daily, read to your child with the hard book, read with your child the somewhat easier book, and lastly let him read the easy one to you by himself. Do this everyday.
