Brick is your friend! The more brick the better to protect and control fires and weeds. Sand under the bricks keep them level and keep them from shifting over time.

First decide what sort of features you'd like your fire pit to include. Do you want just a grill, or will you prefer more "indoor" type cooking alternatives such as a deep fryer, burner tops or oven? Make sure all cooking pieces are removable so they can be given the most thorough cleaning.

For the flooring, slate is a beautiful way to go, however it is pricey. Brick pavers would be a different option. A pergola cover is always nice and you can build your own fire pit instead of purchasing one, and it will be much better.
